Let's face it. The United States calls itself a democracy, but in most respects. it is a myth to call our national government a democracy. We do not govern ourselves. We elect those who govern us. I do not mean to say that the myth of democracy in America is a fraud or meaningless. it is not. Because our president and our governor, our senators and our representatives are elected and reelected to office, they remain sensitive to public opinion. That discipline is very real. As Alexander Hamilton once wrote, in America the popular will does indeed rule in the long run....
