Democracy in Ashfield: It Takes a Whole Town

Let's face it. The United States calls itself a democracy, but in most respects. it is a myth to call our national government a democracy. We do not govern ourselves. We elect those who govern us.

I do not mean to say that the myth of democracy in America is a fraud or meaningless. it is not. Because our president and our governor, our senators and our representatives are elected and reelected to office, they remain sensitive to public opinion.

That discipline is very real. As Alexander Hamilton once wrote, in America the popular will does indeed rule in the long run....

Ashfield's Hill Center for World Studies is well launched into its third year with a continuation of The New Ways of and Looking at the World Seminar, and new plans for three summer workshops on the oceans in world history for high-school teachers in New York City and for disseminating knowledge and interpretation of postcolonial studies for teachers of world history. The oceans project is a joint enterprise with historians and educators at New York University, and will get underway next year.
The mission activity of the center is dialog among scholars and teachers exploring new scholarship in a series of world history topics, with an emphasis on cultural history and the experience of subaltern peoples around the world.
